RI Credit Unions Raise $65,000 for Special Olympics in 2022

2022 CU Donation to Special Olympics

More than 100 golfers teed off under blue skies and pleasant temperatures at the Credit Unions of Rhode Island Charity Golf Tournament held at Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth, Mass on July 11. The foursomes thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon playing golf with friends and colleagues for their charitable partner, Special Olympics Rhode Island.

Prior to the shotgun start, Credit Unions of Rhode Island Social Responsibility Committee Chairman David Dupere from Wave Federal Credit Union recognized Gary Furtado from Navigant Credit Union with a token of appreciation on behalf of the Credit Unions of Rhode Island for his generous support and contributions for Special Olympics Rhode. Dupere wished him all the best as Furtado will retire later this year.

During the awards dinner, Dupere expressed his gratitude to all the credit unions and business partners in Rhode Island for their support in the past year for Special Olympics Rhode Island.

CCUA President/CEO Ronald McLean extended his thanks to David Dupere and the members of the Social Responsibility Committee for all they do for Special Olympics Rhode Island. He also made note of the recognition given to Dennis DeJesus by the Credit Unions of Rhode Island in May at the CU Accelerate Conference. DeJesus, who recently retired from Special Olympics Rhode Island, played in the tournament with his colleagues to support the credit union event and introduce his new successor, Edwin Pacheco.

Members of the Social Responsibility Committee presented a check in the amount of $65,000 to Special Olympics Rhode Island Executive Director Edwin Pacheco and athlete Michael Lucca. These funds encompass the total amount raised in the year by credit unions, members, sponsors, etc. representing more than $1.44 million since 1998.

Edwin Pacheco was thrilled by the donation made by the Credit Unions of Rhode Island and grateful for their continuous support. He pointed out that these donations for the athletes of Rhode Island give them the opportunity to show the world what they can do! He looks forward to working with the credit unions in the years ahead. Pacheco shared the spotlight as he introduced Michael Lucca whose message of “thanks” was the cherry on top!
